Turkeyman: Teaching Chinese Students a Made-up Thanksgiving Tradition

In the Chinese city of Shaoxing they are celebrating Thanksgiving with Turkeyman...

For most of China the fourth Thursday of November is just another day. There is no football, no sweet potato pie, and little turkey to speak of.  That is, unless you are in the Fifth grade classroom of Geoffrey Fella, located in the city of Shaoxing. There, Mr. Fella has introduced a completely made-
up Thanksgiving tradition that has resonated with his students.
Watch Mr. Fella sing the Turkeyman song with his class

The Story:
"Sing him praises he's a Turkey"
Turkeyman is a man-Turkey, aged 35, who lives' in Rhode Island on Turkey Street.  Every Thanksgiving Eve he enters your house through the window and gives you a Turkey from his pot. There is a corresponding song about Turkeyman that every American sings at the dinner table on Thanksgiving.

In the Spring of 2014 Geoffrey Fella, a graduate of a small liberal arts College in Florida, relocated to China to take part in a two-year teaching program. He was assigned to teach English to a Fourth grade class in Shaoxing, a prefectural city in Eastern China. By November of that year, homesick and bored with the typical lesson plans, Mr. Fella had the idea of bringing  some American fun into the classroom.

And so Turkeyman was born.

Mr. Fella’s class fell in love with the fable of Turkeyman and the song.  This year, to fully immerse the students, Mr. Fella will be having his class over to his house for a full Thanksgiving dinner with a special appearance from the Turkeyman himself.

Watch the full Turkeyman lesson here

"Now he's in your house."

Is It Wrong:
When asked if he felt that presenting Turkeyman as an actual American tradition is taking advantage of his students Mr. Fella responded, “Turkeyman was never meant to be a trick, it was meant to be a
fun way to teach my students about an otherwise boring tradition that would seem foreign to them.  Yes, Turkeyman is funny, but I feel my kids are in on the joke. They laugh about it as much as I do.”

Whether the students actually know Turkeyman is not the true way Americans celebrate Thanksgiving is uncertain.  What is certain is that it has brought a taste of America to a group of Chinese students who are enjoying every minute of it.

The Solution to Facebook's Video Problem

The world's first Facebook trending channel

Like it or not Facebook is positioning itself to become a video first site.  It already boasts of having 8 billion daily video views. Whether that number is doctored or not, a massive number of videos are being played.  With thousands of hours of content uploaded to Facebook daily there is an overwhelming amount worth watching. The problem lies in that discovering the majority of videos, let alone those that matter, is near impossible.  You can neither search for videos nor set Facebook to only show you videos. Instead, to see videos you must rely on what your friends have posted on your timeline or through an advertisement directed at you.  For a site with aspirations to become the largest video platform in the world, there is a lot of content users are missing out on.
What is the Problem?
Facebook already hosts a great deal of videos, many of which are not available anywhere else on the web. Facebook’s rapidly expanding video library will soon rival YouTube’s, but most users will only have the chance to see a fraction of what is available. If your goal is to see the very best videos online, the ones that are trending, the kind of videos that are worthwhile, there currently is no guarantee you will see it on Facebook.  The issue is compounded if you want to search for a video. Up until now there has been no way to search for only videos on the platform.  Without both a more effective discovery interface and search capabilities, Facebook video is only providing a minute portion of the value it could have for users.

The Unreel Solution:
Introducing the only way to discover and search trending Facebook videos.

Click here to use Unreel's Facebook search
Unreel is one of only a handful of companies who is working with Facebook to get the latest Trends using their APIs and have sifted through the huge amount of videos and the data on engagement around them. Utilizing the data, Unreel has rolled out several new integrations on its site to deliver the first and best way to truly unlock Facebook’s video potential.  Unreel has a patent-pending technology that assesses which videos are trending on the web and allows you to view them on categorized channels on Unreel.co.  We now include Facebook videos in the mix on these channels (Trending, LOL, Music, Gaming, etc.)  Unreel has also rolled out a Facebook channel, featuring the hottest Facebook videos, with the best moments tagged based on our analysis of engagement around them.  Our Facebook channel is the best place on the web to catch up and interact with what is TRENDING on Facebook videos. Our last integration with Facebook is a first-of-its-kind search.  Unreel is currently the only Facebook specific video search online! Our site allows you to query a key word and pull results from the growing pool of popular videos on Facebook.  With our technology you can also search by comments on specific moments, bringing you the exact part of the video you are interested in.

Facebook video discovery and search is here.  See the power of Facebook video on Unreel.

NASA's searching for Mars Astronauts. Do you have what it takes?

See if you meet the requirements to become a NASA Astronaut on the first manned mission to Mars...

Click here to watch our Mars channel featuring the best videos from NASA and the web about Mars

Do you ever look up at night and dream of visiting the stars?  NASA has begun officially searching for the next generation of Astronauts to explore Mars and beyond. They will begin accepting applications on December 14th so there is not much time left for you to bolster your resume. This could be your chance to experience the rarified lack of air that few people have ever reached, and enter space.  No other human endeavor has carried such prestige and risk of peril.

You may think you are up to the challenge, but NASA has some strict requirements to even qualify for being considered.  How many do you meet?

1. Citizenship:
Applicants for the Astronaut Candidate Program must be citizens of the United States. Applicants with valid U.S. dual-citizenship are also eligible.

The first person on mars is going to be an American, cause ‘Merica! That’s why! It will be hard to find a moment more patriotic than the one when an American plants the Red White and Blue flag in Martian soil for the first time.

2. Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics.

All those years of hitting the books and studying while your friends were out “living it up” are about to pay off.  As an astronaut you would be a pioneer living out the greatest adventure in human history while your peers most likely toil in middle management. Who’s the nerd now?

3. Experience:
At least 3 years of related, progressively responsible, professional experience or at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft.

3 years of related experience sounds reasonable, but what counts as related experience? NASA does not specify, but you can bet being an avid Star Wars fan is not going to cut it.  Graduate level education in a related field could be your ticket to the 3-year requirement, as could interestingly enough, being a teacher at the K-12 level.  That’s right, kindergarten teachers are space eligible!

4. Physical:
Distance and near-visual acuity: Must be correctable to 20/20, each eye, blood pressure not to exceed 140/90 measured in a sitting position, and standing height between 62 and 75 inches.

Being a four-eyes is unacceptable to NASA, but thankfully LASIK corrective eye surgery can amend that.  Unfortunately 6'6'' Michael Jordan will not be going to space anytime soon, disappointing Space Jam fans everywhere.

Those are the core requirements to even have your application considered, but there is far more to becoming an astronaut than that.  If your application is selected, NASA will perform a background check, hold several rounds of interviews, and conduct a full-fledged “astronaut” physical. If you pass each one of these steps, congratulations, you are now an official astronaut candidate!

So you are an Official Astronaut candidate, what now?

This is when the real fun begins, however there is still no guarantee you will become an astronaut. Official candidates undergo a two-year training and evaluation period at the Johnson Space Center Astronaut Office in Houston, Texas. The Astronaut Candidate training is designed to develop the knowledge and skills required for formal mission training upon selection for a flight. This process includes rigorous military water survival training, demanding physical conditioning, and a heavy course load.  Upon completing the two-year training period, candidates are assessed on their mastery of required knowledge and skills, physical suitability, and overall performance, at which point they will either be accepted or rejected as the next generation of astronauts.

Is YouTube Red the Future of the Internet?

The Turning of a Red Tide:

YouTube entered a brave new world last week as it released YouTube red.  This move represented a shift in new Internet paradigm as one of the world’s largest marketing platform is now taking steps to adopt a subscription-based model.  This may not seem like a revolution for the world of video media.  Ever since people began recording content they have been selling it. Movies charge admission, cable charges subscriptions, as do online streaming sites such as Netflix and Hulu, so it seems only natural that YouTube the content provider would do so as well. However YouTube is not purely a content provider. At its core it has always been a social media platform. As a widely adopted social media site the monetization strategy for YouTube has focused around selling ads, the same as Twitter and Facebook.  Now with YouTube Red, YouTube is in many ways pioneering a new business model for web giants who have thus far offered services in return for eyeballs to flash ads at.

Two factors drove YouTube to adopt a subscription-based model and they will continue to shape the web going forward:

1. Ad Blocker
It is incorrect to think that YouTube has ever actually been a free site.  In fact the saying ‘there is no such thing as a free lunch’ aptly fits most the world wide web.  The price you pay to access content is not monetary, you pay something far more valuable — your time.  Marketers are desperate to grab your focus for even a second to get a message across.  This is what funds the majority of websites you visit and YouTube is no exception.  That is why Ad Blockers are so scary; they threaten the very balance of how content is delivered on the web.  With over 198 million computers running ad blockers and growing, the time-in-exchange-for- content proposition is broken.  If the trends persist, and people continue to implement Ad Blockers at the current rate, content providers will no longer be able to provide content solely in return for your time.  YouTube is hedging its bets against a future where ad blockers are ubiquitous and content is no longer free, by expanding into a subscription based revenue model.

2. Content Creators:
YouTube is a platform that has helped propel its own content creators into stardom. Now, YouTube celebrities are superstars in their own right and are some of the most influential people on the web. Armed with a sea of dedicated fans ready to mobilize at their idols’ whim, YouTube’s biggest names have serious clout.  YouTube’s decision to leverage the personalities their site has created is a testament to just how popular YouTube Celebrities are.  It is also a clear indication that these stars no longer need YouTube as a means to profit off their content.  If fans are willing to pay YouTube a fee to access their favorite YouTubers, then those fans will follow those personalities wherever their videos go.  The leash has been cut and now some of the most popular content on the web could be available somewhere else than YouTube. Already other sites are preparing to, or are already hosting content from former YouTube stars behind a pay gate. Production companies, such as Big Block Entertainment, have begun creating videos and movies for YouTube celebrities with Hollywood quality production value.  What they produce will be highly-in-demand exclusive content that does not need the YouTube or YouTube red platform to attract an audience. Rather, sites with more favorable terms for the content creator will win their lucrative partnerships.

If YouTube Red is a hit and if former Youtube stars find success branching away from the site, the future of the internet will be a vastly different place.
